Nobody can deny that the 1970s yielded some of the most formidable electronics design, the best being West German. This Grundig audio sideboard, boasting a radio, record player and stereo speakers, is proof enough. Done in metal, wood veneer and black glass, this piece is all about slim, straight horizontal lines. The four control knobs and the turntable are about the only round shapes you'll encounter, as the 70s did away with the dreamy, fluid shapes of the previous decade, and established a more hard-nosed approach to life and, as we can see, design. Fifty years on, the machine lights up when you turn it on, but it needs an expert's touch in order to be fully working again.
