Palisander Scandinavian one-drawer Console, Denmark, 1960s
Scandinavian design quietly boasts a simple approach, coupled with masterful woodwork. This console table fits right into that, with its simple, mostly rectangular shapes put together in a calm and unassuming manner. It consists of a tabletop and one slim pull-out drawer with a small but useful storage space on top of it. Due to the natural beauty of wood used, there wasn't a great need for ornamentation, which was mainly reserved for the tabletop's sides and the structural pieces that are halfway up the legs. It's in this final place that the manufacturer chose to exhibit their talent - see how the long, horizontal piece at the back tapers slightly as it reaches legs. That is, of course, a practical solution, and it is done beautifully. It's almost a shame that they didn't resort to such tricks elsewhere on the piece, but that's what makes this particular event more valuable and striking.
