Side table in style of Marcello Siard for Longato, Italy, 1970s
What this boxy little side table has in common with Marcello Siard is the design philosophy that stands behind them both. The 1960s saw the accelerated rise of plastic as a go-to material for furniture making, and it brought seemingly endless possibilities and shapes with it, mostly curved. Never before was it an option to design something light, thin and strong, and to do so en masse. As time went by, though, most early plastic became brittle as it aged. Fortunately, this particular piece is made from another miracle material: fiberglass. Fiberglass is more resilient, that's why we make boats out of it rather than plastic. Half a century later, this yellow beauty is eager to carry on as a nightstand, side table, storage unit or whatever you've got in mind for it.
